Targeting Fleet Safety and Insurance Improvements Using Video Telematics

The Fleet Challenge

Stellar Insurance has a fleet of 80 vans that operate across Scotland and the North of England. As part of its duty of care commitment and responsible fleet strategy, the company was looking to improve road safety, protect the welfare of drivers and tackle the challenge of rising  insurance costs.

 

The Solution

Stellar Insurance teamed up with SureCam to roll out advanced video telematics across its fleet operation.  The two-camera solution combines a front-facing dashcam with a rugged and weatherproof, rear-facing camera to capture what happens ahead and behind the  vehicle when a collision or near miss occurs. The video telematics solution also includes an in-cab panic alarm and remote live streaming, enabling Stellar Insurance to quickly respond to an emergency and visually check on the welfare of the driver.

“The SureCam solution is giving us added visibility of what is happening on the road, so we can identify and challenge non-fault claims, while having the insight needed to encourage defensive and responsible  driving styles,” explains Ross Cooper, Managing Director at Stellar Insurance Reinstatement Services. “As the technology becomes an integral part of our processes and systems, it will help us to eliminate avoidable insurance-and fleet-related costs, minimise road and driver risk, and protect the reputation of the business."

 

The camera system has been installed on 80% of the vans, with the remaining part of the fleet having the technology installed as part of Stellar Insurance’s vehicle replacement programme, handled by Enterprise Flex-E-Rent. The phased approach has enabled the company to work closely with SureCam and Enterprise to ensure the installation process avoids any operational disruption or unnecessary 
vehicle downtime.

 

“The overall feedback from drivers has been very positive, with a growing understanding of the benefits the camera system can provide. We have been open and upfront with our mobile teams throughout the roll-out to ensure they are aware of our objectives and we can quickly address any concerns. This has resulted in widespread buy-in that will enable us to use the technology to better engage and coach drivers moving forward,” said Ross Cooper.
